Astor, a 29-year-old with an ailment called Devershai, has to perform the duty of her family line soon. It's up to her to save her people from being wiped from this planet, from being eaten and forgotten in waves. It's up to her to walk to the cliff edge to spare her children, her cousins, her loved ones, and the random strangers she meets on the street. No one knows it, but their futures depend on Astor doing her duty.
But Astor ran a long time ago, so she doesn't think about it. She doesn't think about anything.
Astor focuses on her chosen family, all running from their own promises and lifelong titles. Her best friend Noah tries desperately to find a real life in a place she used to dream about escaping to. Noah's husband, Juke, deals with a crumbling mind and a growing pressure to take care of his loved ones. And Osh, Astor's soulmate, makes a final, ugly decision for them all.
Devershai is the story of a long line of women deciding they won't destroy themselves in the name of peace. Of what happens when you turn your back on the people counting on you, and then spend your life fighting to show them your face again. It's the story of love beyond existence, of respect through humiliation, and of finding your own place in this world.
